Gaming is often a social endeavor, connecting individual gamers through multiplayer sessions. Game servers are responsible for syncing multiple, disparate players’ actions and reflecting them back across the network. To do this successfully, game servers must be able to sync and display gameplay simultaneously—regardless of the differences in the individual gamers’ location.

The imbalance between gamers’ location and network performance slows the whole game for all players. There is a growing need for solutions that deploy multiplayer games on local cloud servers, decreasing the imbalance across users and ensuring that gaming is more about skill and fairness rather than network strength or speed. 

CDN companies take the sting out of downloading on-demand content by caching highly used data at the edge, or pieces of the content that form a buffer when downloading large files. This delivers near-instant game downloads for subscribers.

Without CDN, packets will get dropped due to congestion, disproportionately hitting servers that are in far away data centers. This increases the demand in a limited amount of servers, resulting in seemingly insurmountable download times.

“Video games don’t cause violence-lag does”. Virtually every gamer in the history of gaming must have uttered this refrain at one time or another in response to attempts by pencil-pushing bureaucrats to ban games. - Well, if lag is the problem, the good folks at Haste may have found a solution.

Haste was founded in 2015 by gamers to solve a problem that all gamers face: latency and packet loss in online gaming. Their solution: an application-agnostic network optimization service with a focus on gaming. Through software-defined networking, Haste’s almost-God’s eye view of network latency allows them to detect supported gameplay and take over traffic on supported servers located in North America, Latin America, Europe as well as the Middle East. Their multipath technology allows them to locate and manage internet “fast paths” on demand, replicate packets and then reassemble them at the point of the game server. By offering the fastest roundtrip times available, gamers can thus play live games online with minimal latency, jitter, and without any packet loss.

Lynn Perry took over the role of CEO in may 2018. The company graduated from the Techstars Cloud accelerator program two years earlier in 2016 and closed their first seed round. However, as a startup building an entirely new product from scratch, they relied on a bare metal servers, dedicated bandwidth - a costly proposition for a venture-backed startup. Perry’s joining the team coincided with an evolution of the company’s operating model from what she calls “the F350 of networks” towards more fine-tuned networks made possible through the flexibility of VMs. “It was a bit of a learning curve” explains Perry, “by learning more about how our technology works, and innovated on it, we moved towards a lower-cost model”. 

Haste currently supports around two dozen games, including popular titles, Fortnite, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, PUBG, Counterstrike, and League of Legends. Gamers can simply start a 14-day trial by visiting their website directly. According to Perry, the company already generates revenue from thousands of subscriptions to Haste Pro. However, the Atlanta-based startup is now going beyond its current direct-to-consumer revenue model thanks to a game changing partnership with Ericsson.

Perry and her team saw an opportunity in the newfound interest of ISPs and Telcos to expand into gaming. According to Perry, Ericsson played a crucial role as both a business partner, scaling through their sales and technical experts, as well as a technical partner, launching Haste across the Ericsson Edge Gravity edge compute network.

To say that the future of gaming is in the Cloud would be an understatement - Cloud gaming is already here, and Parsec is bringing the experience to a computer near you. CEO Benjy Boxer and his team got together to build Parsec in a bid to preserve the fun and camaraderie that came with playing the first generation of gaming consoles into the cloud. 

Boxer says he’s always considered Parsec to be more of a game streaming platform rather than a strictly cloud gaming service. While they’ve got no illusions about the overall benefits of playing games on local hardware, their technology focuses instead on offering gamers unique gaming experiences like ‘co-playing’ to share rather than alternative game distribution methods like cloud gaming is mostly known for today.

“We approached the problem from the ground up,” says Parsec. They went about building their capturing, encoding, streaming, decoding, and rendering technology for a native low-latency, high frame rate and HD gaming environment. 

Parsec has managed to carve out a niche in an increasingly crowded and competitive market through unique offerings, like partnering with the cloud-based GPU-accelerated virtual machines hosting company Paperspace to offer low latency, and high-quality streamers optimized for remote gaming. This means that gamers can expect 60 fps video streaming over the internet from any access point. Paperspace’s Parsec Template even comes with Steam, Origin, Razer & the Blizzard App and Google Chrome pre-installed. 

But for those who don’t like renting, Parsec’s most interesting feature might just be the ability for users to configure their own gaming rig remotely which could be then accessed from anywhere. It looks like that might be what caught the eye of execs at Hewlett-Packard. HP surprised many at CES 2018 when they announced that Parsec would be powering their new OMEN Game Streaming Software which will be shipped out with every HP OMEN Gaming PC. This means that Parsec basically turns any computer into a virtual gaming server. 

While Parsec still sees itself as a gaming platform for the time being, there is no reason why its tech can’t be used as a complete PC replacement.

Blacknut’s “Netflix for Gaming” democratizes Service Provider Bundles

As gaming moves further into the Cloud, many of Gaming as a Service (GaaS) options available to subscribers seem to be increasingly geared towards an exclusive elite of hardcore gamers. But for everyone else, there's Blacknut. 

In contrast to the dominant trend in cloud gaming whose high entry bar––requiring investments of both time and treasure into high-performance hardware, the latest AAA title on top of costly subscriptions––which can be prohibitively expensive, Blacknut’s “Netflix for Gaming” is an appeal to the casual gamer. 

Established in Rennes, France in 2016 by a team led by CEO Olivier Avaro, Blacknut set out to ‘democratize gaming’ by releasing their first product in 2018. 

Blacknut offers subscribers access to the largest family-friendly game catalog worldwide. By virtualizing and streaming games from the Cloud, they also remove the need to download games to play. Any user with a half-decent internet connection can pick up a controller, login and start playing (Though they recommend an XBox One controller) from a wide range of devices already in the home, including PCs, smartphones, smart TVs and set-top-boxes. Being ported for windows, MacOS, linux, Android and Amazon’s Fire TV stick, players can seamlessly drop and pick up games between devices. 

The company operates under both a B2B model––bundling with service providers––and a direct to consumer, or B2C model, offering “all inclusive” pricing of $9.99 per month. At this price range, Blacknut hopes to lower the entry bar for cloud gaming for the mass market.

Aside from its subscription-based access to its 400+ title catalogue, Blacknut adapts the Netflix model to its licensing strategy as well. Through agreements with game publishers, Blacknut games are made available to subscribers in most countries across the globe. 

An explosion in global demand for gaming––estimated at approximately 3 billion players––has turned Blacknut’s “Netflix for Gaming” model into an increasingly attractive proposition for service providers. In fact, Blacknut has already entered agreements with major European telcos SwissCom and TeamGames (a Telecom Italia division) as well as the Isaeli telecom giant Partner TV, to bundle their service as an extra offering to subscribers. 

Blacknut’s steady subscriber growth has witnessed an exponential acceleration in the first months of 2020 which Avaro links to the series of lockdowns covering much of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s perhaps uncomfortable to admit, but the silver lining for COVID-19 was that it became a massive opportunity for us” Avaro says. According to him, boredom from watching Netflix series has pushed many towards gaming.

The company is also leveraging the power of 5G networks to reduce latency and jitter. By streaming games from servers on the Edge, Blacknut will be able to offer their ever increasing list of subscribers a more seamless and immersive gaming experience.

Latency is the scourge of the gaming industry. Many-a-gamer have vented frustration over online multiplayer experiences ruined by lag. With more and more gaming moving online, and world-events precipitating developments in the world of e-sports, there is a market out there for low-latency gaming solutions.  That said, latency is caused by physical distance between game servers and the end-user. This means that while game studios can’t expect to do away with lag completely, they might hold out hope for the Montréal-based startup Edgegap. 

Edgegap’s solution to the latency problem is to bring the gaming servers as close to the gamers as physically possible: by replacing outdated systems with “next gen” infrastructure on the edge. The company, which was founded in 2018 by ex-Cisco telco specialist Mathieu Dupperré, helps game studios reduce lag and improve player experience through technology that automatically selects the fastest server in the network for a determined group of players.

Edgegap’s decision-maker tool “Arbitrium” cuts lag by orchestrating multiple locations to find the best suited edge locations for online matches rather than through centralized data centers. This solution was publicly put to the test against Ubisoft’s blockbuster game Far Cry 5 last Fall. Edgegaop’s proof-of-concept successfully demonstrates how their tech reduces latency by a staggering 58 percent compared to Ubisoft's legacy architecture - reducing average roundtrip times for data from 116 to 49 milliseconds. 

The test’s success has serious implications for purveyors of edge solutions, and “could help move the sector further along by helping to create demand for such services,” writes Martha Degrasse for Light Reading, “if service providers and others continue to invest in mini data centers for edge computing, the telecom industry and the gaming industry could have a lot to offer one another.” The relationship is symbiotic: “gamers need the proximity of edge servers, and the companies that invest in those servers will need the traffic to generate financial returns.” 

“Milliseconds can be worth millions” in the gaming market valued at an estimated $152 billion. Reducing latency provides game studios an indisputable “edge” over their competitors. As eSports competitions move online amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, networking issues plaguing real-time multiplayer gaming are increasingly under scrutiny. Studios slow to adopt solutions like Edgegap won’t be able to ensure fair levels of latency amongst competitors.

Unsurprisingly, Edgegap’s focus on easy integration appeals to game developers looking to reach new markets around the world by improving the player experience in locations where lack of server access previously deemed them impractical.  Their elegant edge solution has caught the eye of multiple gaming industry investors, with Konvoy Ventures and Hiro Capital leading the startup’s $1 million seed financing round. Their team recently expanded with the appointment of gaming industry veteran Vincent Archambault as Chief Strategy Officer, whose 15 years experience as a game producer imparts direct insight into studios’ infrastructure needs.
